YOUTH FILM CLUB OF CANADA
CREATIVE WRITING
From genres to ideas and using teamwork, we have developed a fun and unique model for getting an idea from your head to script format.
Taking our clients through small steps to realistic dialogue and clear action.
What format is needed for screenplays, for film and television? What do the short forms in a screenplay mean? Who are the notes for, actors, editors, design?
By the end of our writing sessions, our theory is simple “if you are hit by a bus tomorrow, a director should have no questions while reading your script.”
ACTING
While writing and moving on to the next stages, we will guide clients through improv games and empathy practices.
What emotions are needed? What is the first thought that comes to mind? Who is the opposite of you and what drives them?
Leading our clients past the second guessing and discomfort, giving them the freedom to be someone else.
DIRECTING AND TECHNICAL
Every member of the class will be given an opportunity to learn and use different equipment based on the needs of the screenplay. They will be shown how to use a basic lighting kit, simple continuity notes, camera positions and use, dolly movement, etc.
With a sign up sheet designed purely for that production, each client can pick a scene to try a different job. You can direct one screen, light the next and do continuity for the next. If someone is chosen to act in a scene, that will be their primary job. Teamwork and communication is the key to a well run film set.
EDITING
How does it all fit together? How do we use the continuity notes to make certain no time is wasted on bad takes or bloopers?
Are there visual effects on this project? What are the basics of getting those effects into the scene? What sound and visual aids are used to lessen the shock of a transition from scene to scene?
Finally, the class will get a chance to view their hard work come to life.
